2014 Woodwind Winners
In May 2014, the National Society of Arts and Letters awarded $26,000 to five outstanding young woodwind performers as part of its National Woodwind Competition held at the Culture Center in Charleston, West Virginia.

Julia DeRosa

Julia, a 23-year-old oboist, received her BM degree from Juilliard in 2013 and expects to complete her Masters of Music from Juilliard in 2015. She is a student of Elaine Douvas, Principal Oboist, Metropolitan Opera and Chair of the Woodwinds Department at Juilliard. Julia is the winner of the Peter Mennin Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Music.

Anna, 24, is a clarinetist who graduated from the Eastman School of Music and received a Masters of Music in Clarinet Performance from Juilliard. She won the Lynn Conservatory Concerto Competition in 2013 and has appeared with numerous orchestras in the New York area. She is currently pursuing her professional performance certificate at Lynn University Conservatory of Music. Her major teachers are John Manasse, an internationally acclaimed soloist, and Bil Jackson, former principal clarinetist of the Colorado Symphony.

Rebecca Swain Chapman
El Paso Chapter
Rebecca, 22, is a flutist who graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a BM in Flute Performance and has just received her MM in flute performance from the University of Texas at Austin. She studied at Carnegie Mellon with Jeanne Batresser and is currently a student of Marianne Gedigian. Rebecca has won several competitions in the past year, and was a finalist for the Jan and Beattie Concerto Competition at the Brevard Music Festival. She has performed with many orchestral and chamber groups and has participated in master classes.

Laura, a 24-year-old flutist, is currently working towards her MM at the University of Maryland, studying with Aaron Goldman. She has been awarded various prizes including first prize, flute, at the Society of Washington Young Artist Competition.

Virginia/North Carolina Chapter
Hannah, a 20-year-0ld flutist, is a junior pursuing a BM in flute performance at The Oberlin Conservatory. She has won numerous competitions, including the 2013 Central Ohio Flute Association College Division Competition, and has performed as an orchestra musician with contemporary and classical ensembles.

Judges for the competition were: Grant Cooper, Artistic Director and Conductor of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Artistic Director of Bach and Beyond Festival in Fredonia, NY; Linda Strommen, oboist and professor of oboe at Indiana University; Robert Turizziani, clarinetist and Music Director of the River Cities Symphony, the West Virginia Youth Orchestra, and the Chicago Chamber Orchestra; and Carol Wincenc, flutist and teacher at The Juilliard School and Stony Brook University. Ms.Wincenc was also presented the NSAL Gold Medal Award for Lifetime Achievement at the 2014 Annual Meeting Awards Dinner.
Accompanists for the competition were: Alicja Basinska, Angela Park, and Liang-yu Wang – three outstanding pianists.
