School of the Art Institute of Chicago Scholarship Recipients

2019 Recipient

Morgan Gruer, 25, $3000 to take a Painting & Drawing Intensive and A Drawing on Site: Urban Sketching Intensive. Morgan is a multidisciplinary Director, Animator and Artist who works between New York and Los Angeles. She grew up in a creative household in New Jersey where she fostered a passion for art, design, music, and film, and was fortunate enough to build a career that combines all of these. Morgan studied Communications Design at Pratt Institute, and her work stems from this interdisciplinary background, seamlessly fusing live action animation, illustration, design, and effect supervision. Morgan draws on her passion for film and art to direct videos for artists such notables as Rihanna, Celine Dion, and Ed Sheeran. She was the recipient of a 2016 Naomi Rabb Winston Two Dimensional Art Scholarship that aided her to study at The Skopelos Foundation for the Arts in Skopelos, Greece.

2018 Recipient

Sophia Reed, 27, $3000 to study Explorations in Acrylics and Digital Fabrication.
She grew up in Warrensburg, Missouri and now lives in Kansas City where she works full-time and spends as many hours as possible creating art in her day-to-day life. She graduated from The University of Central Missouri where she received a BFA in Painting and a BSE in Art Education. Sophia plans to establish her painting studio practice for a few years before attending graduate school in 2020. She works through a variety of mediums including painting, sculpture, and ceramics.

2017 Recipients

Elmi Ventura Mata, 23, Philadelphia, $3,000 to refine his painting skills, technically and conceptually by taking Shonna Renee Pryor’s Introduction to Oil Painting class and Rebecca George’s Painting Materials+Methods course. He is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Arts and is enrolled in the master’s in fine arts program at Temple University.

Alex Chandler Stein, 25, Long Grove, IL, $1,000 to sharpen his skills as a visual artist and improve his creative approach as a performer by taking Valerie Anne Xanos’ Experimental Painting /Drawing Intensive. He is a graduate of the University of Chicago with a degree in theater and performance and a minor in visual arts. He works with theater companies and performance ensembles in Chicago and film projects in the Midwest.
