National Career Awards Competition:

The hallmark of NSAL is its National Awards Competition, which is held each year on a four-year rotation of the following categories: drama, musical theater, contemporary ballet, and instrumental music.

Participants in the National Awards Competition compete at the local chapter level for a series of monetary awards. First-place winners of the local chapter competitions are sent at the chapter’s expense to the National Competition which is held each spring during the Society’s annual meeting.

Winston Scholarship Program:

A second important activity of NSAL is the annual Winston Scholarship Program for visual artists and vocalists. Each year, scholarships totaling $18,000 – $20,000 are awarded to artists in these fields who are sixteen to twenty-two years of age. Supported by a generous endowment from Shirley Rabb Winston, these scholarships are used for special study in the recipient’s field. In most years as many as eight to ten scholarships are awarded in varying amounts.

NSAL Young Writers’ Fund:
In 2014, NSAL partnered with the Iowa Young Writers’ Studio to sponsor one high school student each year to attend a two-week summer session at the Iowa Young Writers’ Studio in Iowa City, Iowa, home of the University of Iowa.

NSAL Scholarship to CalArts:
In 1987, the National Society of Arts and Letters established the NSAL Scholarship Fund to support students attending the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Valencia, California.  As of 2014, NSAL has given $142,000 in scholarships to 42 students through that program.
